Apple statement apologises for iOS 6 Maps problems

September 21, 2012 10:20 am

Have you upgraded to iOS 6 yet? It?s a lot more of the same really, save for a few tweaks and the one main difference: Apple?s proprietary maps service. But it?s not been to everyone?s liking. In fact, there?s been so much outcry over its bugs that Apple?s had to release an official statement. Is it too little too late?

Apple Maps is a noticeably different experience from the Google offering it replaces, and a lot of people simply don?t like change. It doesn?t help, of course, that the app is rife with bugs and problems.

Noteworthy faux pas? include the incredibly warped Eiffel Tower in Paris in the 3D Flyover mode and the fact that Straford-upon-Avon just doesn?t exist. Oops. Apple?s got this to say:

?Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service,? said spokeswoman Trudy Miller. ?We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it. Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better.?

Apple Maps: The backlash

Admission of guilt? Well, it certainly says that the company knows that its new baby doesn?t ?just work? as well as some of its other properties. AllThingsD has it on good authority that the dev team responsible for Apple Maps is currently ?on lockdown? to fix everything. Rather them than us.
