Thousands pray for US at 'America for Jesus' rally

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Thousands of conservative Christians gathered Saturday on Independence Mall in Philadelphia to pray for the future of the United States in the weeks before the presidential election.

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson and Family Research Council president Tony Perkins topped a full day of speakers at "The America for Jesus 2012" prayer rally.

Robertson, a former Republican candidate for president, called the election important, but didn't mention either major political party or candidate by name.

"I don't care what the ACLU says or any atheists say. This nation belongs to Jesus, and we're here today to reclaim his sovereignty," said Robertson, 82, who founded the Christian Coalition and Christian Broadcasting Network, and ran for president in 1988.

Organizers plan another prayer rally Oct. 20 in Washington, D.C., two weeks before President Barack Obama faces Republican Mitt Romney in the presidential election.

Perkins asked the crowd to pray for elected officials including Obama.

"We pray that his eyes will be open to the truth," Perkins said.

A number of event organizers, though, have been vocal critics of the Democratic president.

Steve Strang, the influential Pentecostal publisher of Charisma magazine, which was distributed at the rally, recently wrote in a blog post that America is under threat from a "radical homosexual agenda." He also said Obama "seems to be moving toward some form of European socialism."

And speaker Cindy Jacobs has blamed a mysterious Arkansas bird-kill last year on Obama's repeal of the policy known as "don't ask, don't tell," which allows gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

Speakers throughout the day condemned abortion, gay marriage and population control as practiced by Planned Parenthood. Christian rock music filled the historic mall as speakers challenged the crowd to overcome the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and slothfulness.

The rally was held outside of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Pennsylvania is also where evangelist George Whitefield preached during the first Great Awakening, the 18th-century religious revival that spread through the American colonies.

Ask Engadget: should companies include a cable with a new product?

Ask Engadget

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from is from David, who wants to know if you'd prefer a free cable or a cheaper device when you buy pro audio gear. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I work for a small audio-tech company and we're currently getting close to releasing out first retail product, which does surround sound from stereo inputs -- kinda like Dolby Pro Logic, except good. Internally, we're agonizing over if we should include a stereo RCA cable. Of course, users will need to integrate an additional cable into their set up, but plenty of people will have spares lying around at home. Do you think it's better to:

a) Include a cheap cable and let people who care buy a high quality one?
b) Include a reasonable quality cable but increase the price?
c) Include no cable and make it clear they need to buy one?

Many thanks!"

What a question! We're decidedly of two minds, since given a bit of haggling, most retailers will chuck in a branded lead, but we'd hate to get our shiny new gear home to find it's missing a key component the one time they don't. Our dithering aside, it's time to turn the question over to our faithful Engadgeteers with this chance to shape the future of the high-end audio business for the better, we'd better not disappoint the man!

Starbucks Triggers Customer Service Drama | Small Business Trends

Ignore your customers when making a business decision, and they?ll let you know it. Take the example of caf? chain Starbucks, which recently announced discontinuing free soy milk and syrups for loyal customers. Customers weren?t happy and responded. Your customers are probably the same. Customer service is an important thing, and if you forget about it, even for the benefit of your bottom line, you may find other unfortunate results. Here?s more on the story and what other business bloggers have to say about the importance of listening to customers.

Where Starbucks Went Wrong

They giveth and they taketh away. Free soy milk and syrups that is. These usually cost 50 cents extra, but have been offered free to customers as a reward for making at least five purchases on a registered Starbucks card or mobile app?until now. Of course, the company says they are now tweaking another part of the rewards program by offering its gold-level members, those who make at least 30 purchases over the year, a free drink or food item with every 12 purchases from the cafe chain instead of after every 15 purchases, as before. Wired

Here?s the announcement from Starbucks. Customers were not impressed. One possible reason is that the cafe chain tried to spin the news into something positive, even though company representatives should have known it would be unpopular with customers. After all, the ?rewards? they were adding to the program (a free drink or food item) were less popular than what they were taking away. Some customers make the choice of soy for health or other reasons, so it is more than a preference. You can see some of the customer comments below. Starbucks Blog

From your customer?s point of view. Small business marketing consultant Steve Miller insists Starbucks? biggest mistake was not trying to see things from their customers? point of view. In other words, Miller says Starbucks just called up their marketers and had them create an announcement that tried to make their unpopular decision, probably made purely for business reasons, sound like something good. Had they taken a moment to see things from their customers? point of view, they would have known better. Two Hat Marketing

Small Biz Customer Service Ideas

Meeting your customers? expectations. Consistency is critical in every business. Customers must get the service they have come to expect, or they may not remain customers. This is most important when the customer relationship moves from the offline to the online world, says business owner and blogger Joanna Ellis. Creating the same great customer experience online as in your offline experiences translates into better conversion rates and more revenue. Property Management Insider

When things go bad. Customers who do become perturbed have never had more tools at their disposal to express their anger at your company or brand. One of the most popular places to do this online is Yelp. When you read a bad review of your business there, the first instinct is to strike back. Keep calm, says Rieva Lesonsky. Take some time to figure out what went wrong with this particular customer and the try to reach out and make things right. Grow Smart Biz

Awesomeness is as awesomeness does. The key to being awesome at customer service is not just shining on your good days. Customers should be able to count on the fact that even on your business?s worst days, you will meet or exceed expectations. Belinda Weaver, blogger at Copywrite Matters, argues that a business owner must desire to make good customer service decisions, even when things go wrong. In fact, she says, business owners should treat these problems as opportunities to do the right thing. Copywrite Matters

Making them drool. Blogger Sharyn Sheldon says there is a way businesses can go beyond merely satisfying their customers on a regular basis, to a point where, as she so colorfully puts it, competitors will be drooling with envy. That?s because Sheldon thinks she has the answer for the kind of customer service every business owner dreams of, one where you not only meet customer expectations, but gather input to improve from their suggestions. Hamilton in, Schumacher out at Mercedes

London, Sep 28

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton Friday moved to Mercedes, signing a three-year contract as a replacement for seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.

Schumachers's future plans were immediately not known but reports suggest that there won't be any management role for the German since Niki Lauda has already been announced as a non-executive chairman of the team.

Schumacher, who came out of his retirement to join Mercedes three years ago, has also been linked with a move to BMW Sauber.

In a statement released by Mercedes, Schumacher wished Hamilton and the team best of luck.

"I have had three nice years with the team which unfortunately did not go as well as we all would have wanted on the sporting side. I wish Lewis well and for the team to achieve the success we worked so hard for in the build-up. I would like to thank the team for their trust and all the guys for their unconditional commitment. I will now concentrate on the next races," he said.

Hamilton said he was looking forward to the stint as a fresh challenge.

"It is now time for me to take on a fresh challenge and I am very excited to begin a new chapter racing for the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team. Mercedes-Benz has such an incredible heritage in motorsport, along with a passion for winning which I share.

"Together, we can grow and rise to this new challenge. I believe that I can help steer the Silver Arrows to the top and achieve our joint ambitions of winning the world championships," he said.

Mercedes' team principal Ross Brawn chose his words carefully while thanking Schumacher.

?I would first of all like to thank Michael Schumacher for the important contribution he has made to the growth of our team over the past three seasons,? said Brawn.

?His energy and commitment have never wavered, even when results have not matched our own expectations, and we are determined to finish the 2012 season together on a high. As always, it has been a pleasure to work with Michael,? he added.

BMW Sauber's Sergio Perez has been roped in by McLaren as a replacement for Hamilton. The Mexican, who has already scored two podiums this season, has been signed by McLaren on a multi-year contract.

"I've spent the 2012 season working very hard to demonstrate my potential, but I've always remained humble and focused. I am, and always will be, extremely grateful to Peter (Sauber) and everybody at the Sauber Formula One team for their belief in me, and for giving me the chance to race in Formula One," he said.

Replacement ref furor grows after wild Seattle win

NEW YORK (AP) ? The furor over the work of replacement officials reached a fevered pitch during Week 3 in the NFL, especially Monday night when Seattle beat Green Bay on a desperation pass that many thought was an interception.

Seahawks receiver Golden Tate was awarded a touchdown on the final play after a scrum on the ground in the end zone. Packers safety M.D. Jennings appeared to catch the ball against his body, with Tate getting his arm around the ball.

After a few seconds, one official indicated a stoppage of play, but another signaled touchdown for a conclusion former NFL coach Jon Gruden, working the game on TV, called "tragic" and "comical."

Tate clearly shoved cornerback Sam Shields to the ground on the play, but as Gruden noted, offensive pass interference almost never is called on desperation passes.

"Very hard to swallow," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "I have never seen anything like that in my time in football."

One day after New England coach Bill Belichick was confused about a decisive field goal he thought was off-target and Detroit's Jim Schwartz couldn't understand a 27-yard penalty walk-off for unnecessary roughness, things had gotten even more chaotic.

"These games are a joke," Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman tweeted.

McCarthy was measured in his postgame remarks.

"Most unusual football game I have been a part of," he said. "I know it's been a wild weekend in the NFL and I guess we are part of it."

Packers guard T.J. Lang was even more emphatic, tweeting that the Packers were robbed "by the refs. Thanks NFL."

In Sunday night's Ravens-Patriots game, shoving matches followed even insignificant plays. One TV analyst called it the substitute-teacher syndrome: See how much you can get away with before the real thing returns.

"Nature says for us that we're going to go out there and push the limit regardless," Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway said. "If they're calling a game tight, if they're calling a game loose, it's going to be pushed to the limit. You are pushing it to the brink. If things are going to be called easier, and in some situations I feel like they've been less lenient, too, you've just got to play and see how (it's being called)."

If you can figure it out.

Broncos coach John Fox was fined $30,000 Monday and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio $25,000 for verbal abuse of the officials during a Monday night game against Atlanta on Sept. 17.

More fines are likely for Belichick and Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, and perhaps for others.

Fox and Del Rio were hit for their sideline histrionics, particularly when Fox was told he couldn't challenge a call of 12 men on the field ? he was correct that he could challenge, although replays showed the Broncos were guilty.

Before grabbing the arm of an official, Belichick wanted to know why Justin Tucker's field goal was called good in Baltimore's 31-30 victory Sunday night. He couldn't tell from his angle on the sideline, he said.

"So when the game was over, I went out and I was really looking for an explanation from the officials as to whether the play was under review," he said, "and I did try to get the official's attention as he was coming off the field to ask that, but I really wasn't able to do that."

Most confusing was the mark-off for a Lions penalty in overtime at Tennessee. Officials wound up penalizing Detroit from its 44-yard line rather than from the original line of scrimmage, the Titans 44.

Soon after, Rob Bironas kicked a go-ahead field goal.

Schwartz noted that the alternate official who helps the replacements with administrating penalties was on the Detroit sideline.

"We said, 'You're enforcing it from the wrong spot.' He was adamant that they weren't doing so," Schwartz said. "At that point, we just needed to play."

They didn't play well enough to avoid losing 44-41, and Titans coach Mike Munchak wasn't apologizing for how his team won.

"I don't feel any guilt," Munchak said. "For us, really the obvious answer is there's nothing we can do about who's officiating games. It's the same for everybody, so go out and don't get caught up in all that."

The league and the officials' union met Sunday without reaching any agreement on ending the lockout that began in June. The players' union also called on the 32 team owners to end the lockout because it is compromising the integrity of the game.

While most of the coaches are being careful what they say about the replacements, the players and broadcasters are less inhibited.

"Unfortunately, I feel like that it's like changing an intersection from a stop sign to a red light," Browns kicker Phil Dawson said. "You have to have so many car wrecks before they deem that intersection to be dangerous enough ? and we're heading that way. Someone's going to lose a game, if it hasn't already happened, to get both sides to a pressure point to get a deal done. It's sad."

Certainly not holding back on the criticism are some of the NFL's broadcast partners. Analyst Cris Collinsworth was forthright in his evaluation of the officiating problems Sunday night, as were Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden during last Monday night's flag-fest in Atlanta.

"We don't want to talk about the officials, trust us," ESPN's Tirico said. "But it's affecting the game. When we meet with teams and coordinators, frustration boils out into limited on-the-record statements. Off the record, what guys are saying ? it's a nightmare. It is impacting the game.

"It hasn't burned a team to cost them a playoff spot yet. But you should go back and watch the film. There are so many little things that players are getting away with that is absolutely impacting the game to the detriment of the product."

Yet some players aren't completely down on the performances of the replacements.

Patriots receiver Deion Branch noted all the controversy about officiating throughout the league.

"But I think the bigger picture is that we've all got to understand that, hey, they're making those calls on both sides of the ball," Branch said. "Us as players, we need to remove ourselves from what the refs are doing and just go out and play our game."

Rams defensive end Chris Long offered, apparently with no sarcasm, that the game "hasn't changed at all with the replacement officials because officials don't care about defensive linemen, replacement or first-tier officials."

Then he admitted taking the regular officials for granted.

"The NFL could really use them back," Long said.

Obama to urge UN to confront roots of Muslim rage

NEW YORK (AP) ? Campaign politics shadowing every word, President Barack Obama on Tuesday will challenge the world to confront the root causes of rage exploding across the Muslim world, calling it a defining choice "between the forces that would drive us apart and the hopes we hold in common."

Obama will step before the United Nations General Assembly and declare that the United States will not shrink from its role in troubled, transitioning nations despite the killing of four Americans in Libya, including U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens, and more than 50 people total in violence linked at least in part to an anti-Muslim film.

Obama will also to seek to show U.S. resolve in preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, a menacing issue that has undermined White House relations with Israel's leadership.

In his final international address before the November election, Obama will stand up for democratic values on a stage afforded to presidents, not presidential challengers. He will use it to try to boost his political standing without ever mentioning Republican opponent Mitt Romney.

Were there any doubt that the U.S. presidential campaign hung heavy over Obama's speech, Romney shredded it by assailing Obama's foreign affairs leadership on the eve of the president's speech. Now comes Obama's chance to assert his world vision on his terms.

"Today, we must affirm that our future will be determined by people like Chris Stevens, and not by his killers," Obama said of the U.S. ambassador, who was killed during an assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that the White House has deemed a terrorist attack. "Today, we must declare that this violence and intolerance has no place among our United Nations."

The White House released excerpts in advance of Obama's midmorning speech.

Obama's comments will be scrutinized around the globe and by the gathering of presidents and prime ministers in the famed United Nations hall, given the tumult, terrorism, nuclear threats and poverty that bind so many nations. His emphasis will be on the unrest in the Muslim world and on Iran, whose disputed nuclear ambitions have unnerved much of the world and caused tension between the United States and longstanding ally Israel over whether Obama has forcefully defined his breaking point for military action.

"Make no mistake: a nuclear-armed Iran is not a challenge that can be contained," Obama says in his speech. He adds: "That is why a coalition of countries is holding the Iranian government accountable. And that is why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

That language remains as specific as Obama will publicly describe his "red line" for military intervention.

Setting a sharp political context for the speech, Romney went on the offensive Monday.

"This is time for a president who will shape events in the Middle East, not just be merciful or be at the mercy of the events," Romney said. Focusing on the killing of Stevens and mass bloodshed in Syria, Romney repeatedly ridiculed Obama's comment that nations moving toward democracy after the Arab Spring face "bumps in the road."

That prompted White House spokesman Jay Carney to fire back at Romney: "There is a certain rather desperate attempt to grasp at words and phrases here to find political advantage, and in this case that's profoundly offensive."

Obama's activities at the United Nations say plenty, too: There are not many of them. Campaigning is his imperative.

He is skipping the private meetings with key allies that a U.S. president typically schedules when the whole international community comes to New York. The president will spend only 24 hours in New York in total this time, and he spent some of it Monday to appear on "The View," giving a talk show interview intended to sell his election pitch to a big TV audience.

The dominant theme of Obama's U.N. speech will be his response to the protests raging in places across the Middle East and North Africa. As he has for days, Obama will condemn the violence, defend democratic principles of free speech and promise no U.S. withdrawal of outreach.

Much of the growing ire is aimed at the United States because of anti-Islam film produced in this country, but the White House has now deemed the attack on its consulate in Libya a "terrorist attack" and has not ruled out the possibility it was premeditated. Obama now says it "wasn't just a mob action."

"There are no words that excuse the killing of innocents," Obama says in the speech excerpts. "There is no video that justifies an attack on an embassy. There is no slander that provides an excuse for people to burn a restaurant in Lebanon, or destroy a school in Tunis, or cause death and destruction in Pakistan."

In a preview of Obama's speech, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton appealed Monday for Muslims to show "dignity" as they protest the film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad.

"Dignity does not come from avenging insults," she said in a speech to her husband's Clinton Global Initiative. Romney and Obama were to speak there as well on Tuesday.

The secretary of state was also standing in for Obama, meeting with the presidents of Afghanistan, Egypt, Libya and Pakistan. She was due later in the week to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

For U.S. presidents, the yearly United Nations address is always laced with domestic politics even though the speeches are scripted without campaign references. Wars and the failed attempts at Mideast peace have dominated in recent years.

Romney's campaign made the campaign linkage directly Monday.

"On the eve of his United Nations address, President Obama's foreign policy is in disarray," spokesman Ryan Williams said. "As president, Mitt Romney will repair our relationships abroad and create a safer, more secure nation."

Polling shows Obama has a clear edge over Romney when voters are asked who they think is a stronger leader and would better protect the country.

Amazing 3-D moon photos created from NASA lunar orbiter imagery

Scientists are creating eye-popping new views of the moon in 3-D with the help of a prolific NASA lunar probe currently orbiting Earth's nearest neighbor.

The new 3-D moon pictures were assembled from photos snapped by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which has been snapping high-resolution views of the moon's surface from lunar orbit since 2009. The spacecraft does not have a stereo camera aboard to take 3-D anaglyph images of the moon, but scientists were able to stitch together photos of the same region? taken from different angles and orbits ? to artificially create the three-dimensional lunar views.

?Anaglyphs are used to better understand the 3-D structure of the lunar surface,? said Sarah Mattson, a scientist with the University of Arizona and Arizona State University team that invented the new moon photo technique, in a statement. ?This visualization is extremely helpful to scientists in understanding the sequence and structures on the surface of the moon in a qualitative way.?

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. Beyond-the-moon base stirs up buzz

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: A concept that calls for building a deep-space outpost beyond the moon's orbit has stirred up some positive buzz from space pioneers ? including Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin.

    4. Romney reveals space exploration plans

Mattson will present the 3-D moon photo project to scientists at the annual European Planetary Science Congress in Madrid on Tuesday (Sept. 25).

Mattson and her team have created hundreds of 3-D views from moon photos by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The orbiter's narrow angle camera can only observe the moon from one angle at a time, so the researchers developed an automatic image processing system that combines the photos into anaglyph pictures that can be viewed with standard red-cyan 3-D glasses.

The resulting images make features such as moon craters, ancient lunar volcanic flows and lava tubes jump out in 3-D detail, project officials explained. The images will be posted online for public viewing here: http://lroc.sese.asu.edu/

NASA launched the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter in 2009 on a mission to map the moon's surface in unprecedented detail. The $500 million orbiter was built to seek out potential landing sites for future missions, study the lunar radiation environment and search for resources such as water ice in the moon's permanently shadowed craters.

Georgia vs. Armenia: Which is Better for Travel?

This summer I visited Armenia and Georgia, two countries that are not major travel destinations yet, but are getting increasingly higher traffic. And that?s deserved, because they both rule. Interesting historical sites and ruins, low prices, wonderful nature, friendly locals, an overall very safe environment, and easy access in and out, as both countries are served by decently-priced flights from Europe and (unlike their fellow post-Soviet Caucasian neighbor Azerbaijan) have gotten rid of the painful bureaucratic visa application procedures*. Both Georgia and Armenia are worth visiting and spending a lot of time in, and while they are obviously very similar in some ways, they are not twin brothers at all.

A lot of people asked me to compare them, and I figured that it would be a pretty good idea to do so. Below you?ll find a criteria by criteria comparison of each country combined with a point system ? as if this was a contest. So let?s do it!

CAPITAL CITY

Georgia wins this one. Unlike a lot of travelers who find Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, is bland, I did enjoy its vibe, central square, convenient size and superb national museum, but Tbilisi is on another level. Yerevan is an average capital and a good transportation hub; Tbilisi might be one of the most underrated cities in all of Europe.

Tbilisi

Tbilisi

OK, OK, maybe it lies technically in Asia, but culturally and ethnically I consider Georgia to be way more Eastern European than anything remotely Asian. Its old town is full of rough edges and reminds you at every street corner that people actually live and breathe there, as opposed to some old towns that feel like Disneyland, and the more modern parts have a very interesting vibe to them as well. There are lots of cultural gems here to be harvested. Truly, Tbilisi is a place where one can walk for hours, get lost several times, and keep walking.

Advantage: Georgia

NATURE

Again, the point goes to Georgia. And once again, it?s not because Armenia is lackluster ? with its terrific hills, gorges, forests, lakes and what not ? it?s just that Georgia is way too damn good. Fans of hiking might go into bursts of convulsions upon seeing the peaks of Kazbegi and Svaneti, those places are insane! Georgians think that their country is the most beautiful in the world, and frankly I can hardly think of places that rivals it.

Advantage: Georgia

Mountains of Svaneti, Georgia

Mountains of Svaneti, Georgia

PRICES

Georgia is extremely affordable and will break your bank only if you splurge stupid. Armenia, meanwhile, is truly a CHEAP country to visit. On several occasions during the first few days travelers will wonder ?What the hell?! Is it really THAT cheap?? upon being quoted a price, as they mentally calculate the conversion rate once more just to make sure. Getting around by marshrutka (15-seat vans), eating locally bought food, using the same water bottle and refilling it at public taps, and staying in local homestays can set one back less than $15 a day. Sure, some of the incredibly low costs are a result of the recovering economy and ethical travelers shouldn?t abuse of it, but it does feel good not to have to watch the finances too closely, even when on a budget.

Advantage: Armenia

FOOD

This one is not even close. Georgian food is interesting, hearty, varied, and always served in copious portions. Sitting here typing this, my mouth is watering at the idea of having a huge khachapuri, the home-style cheese-filled flat bread that is their most famous and ubiquitous staple. They also have surprising variety in their stews, eggplant-based dishes, salads, dumplings, and combined with their incredibly fresh produce and world-famous wine, every meal becomes a culinary adventure.

Armenian food, on the other hand, is? meh. You can eat well in Armenia, of course, but the choice tends to be either some greasy kebabs or pizza slices from street stands, or some Russian restaurants that serve good grilled meat and that?s it. Home-cooked fare ain?t that spectacular either, mostly ?functional? food without much flavor or originality to it. And Armenians are not people that eat out a lot, so there are very, very few restaurants, unlike in Georgia where a lot of little cafes serve awesome food. Georgia gets double points for this one (quality and availability).

Advantage: Georgia x 2

COMMUNICATION

Both countries have an official language that is unrelated to any lingo you might know, difficult to pronounce, and written in a completely foreign-looking script. Also, the quasi-totality of locals speak perfect Russian, a heritage from Soviet times, and surprisingly don?t mind using the language at all even among themselves ? despite the frictions they have with the Russian government (especially Georgia). A few phrases of Russian will get you very, very far.

However, just as in every country where Russian is spoken (in Central Asia, Ukraine, and of course Russia itself) English is not widespread at all. It?s as if English and Russian were mutually exclusive! Some Guidebooks might say something along the lines of ?the new generation speaks English as a second language rather than Russian? but that is complete bullsquash. You will encounter locals who know English in ecotourism areas, some homestays, and the odd University student or returning expatriate, but don?t ever ever expect any random person to speak it.

So, who gets the point for ease of communication? Tough call. Georgia has more tourists you can tag along with, and among them LOTS of Poles and Israelis who are very likely to speak at least broken Russian and help you get by, but Armenia has a large returning diaspora and therefore you are very likely to encounter locals who speak native-like English (or French, German, etc.) more often than in Georgia.

Advantage: none

EYE CANDY

What!?! I am a heterosexual single male, and it?s not a sin to merely look.

There are chicks in Georgia, just like every place in the world that doesn?t start in ?On? and end in ?tario,? but the ladies of Yerevan are complete stunners. Period. Point Armenia.

Advantage: Armenia

MONASTERIES

Armenians will remind you every time: their country is the first ever Christian nation. I am far from being a huge fan of organized religion myself, but the branch of Christianity encountered in Armenia (and the one in Georgia, similar but not quite identical) is not the obscene, in-your-face, obtrusive Jesus-this, Jesus-that found in the USA. Non-spiritual travelers are left alone, but can still immerse themselves in the cultural aspects of the religion that are omnipresent in the area.

There are numerous monasteries, and in my humble opinion, the Armenian ones are cooler than their Georgian counterparts. A lot of them are way out and you need to go on a long hike to even reach them, but once you do you have the whole place to yourself. And they are all free to visit, unlike a few in Georgia where some clever money-grabber decided to impose an entrance fee. More on that below.

Advantage: Armenia

Lake Sevan monastery

Lake Sevan Monastery

INDEPENDENT-TOURIST-FRIENDLINESS

This one is a delicate one, and is very subjective. Bluntly, Georgia is more touristy than Armenia. As soon as you leave Yerevan you are way out of any ?Western backpacker? beaten path.

That ain?t to say that Georgia is like Koh Phi Phi, Venice, Cuzco or any other similar shithole, but it?s undeniable that some parts of the country are heading (in my very humble opinion) in the wrong direction. Mestia, the hub for trekking in the otherwise fantastic Svaneti area, is, as of 2012, nothing more than an ugly pile of rubble and construction waste as they are building large hotels. The place might soon become a theme park, even though not more than six years ago it was a completely unspoilt (but granted, dangerous and bandit-ridden) area. Don?t get me wrong: Svaneti deserves tourism. It just needs to take it easy on the over-development, something that is of course hard to fathom when you go from a remote untouched area to a haven for backpackers who come by the dozen almost overnight. Time will tell? but for now, even at the time of my visit, the greedy attitude towards foreign tourists had already begun to point its ugly nose, with random farmers asking 50 lari ($30!!!) to open a church door, and jeep drivers asking the equivalent of a monthly Georgian salary for a two-hour ride. That is a small minority, as every single person without exception in non-touristy areas, and the vast majority in touristy areas, aren?t like that, but it does happen and leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Even with all ethical considerations from me, being fortunate enough to hail from a rich country and travel for pleasure and blahblah, I can?t approve of that, and thus must give the point to Armenia, where it doesn?t cross the mind of the common folk to even try ripping off foreigners.

Advantage: Armenia

Conclusion

So, when all is said and done, the final score is:
Georgia 4 Armenia 4

I wouldn?t have seen it any other way, as I had an equally good time in both countries. So do yourself a favor, and go check ?em both out for yourself!

*About visa procedures, or lack thereof: Georgia is visa-free for most nationalities, and an Armenian visas cost 3000 drams ($7!!!) and are available on arrival at any point of entry ? a two-minute thing.

Findlay Courier: Former Kalida coach indicted

By Ryan Dunn
Staff Writer

PUTNAM COUNTY, OH (FINDLAY COURIER) -? A former coach and technology coordinator for Kalida Local Schools has been indicted in Putnam County on eight felony charges, including allegations that he committed sex crimes with at least three teenage girls.

Jeremy Stober, 41, of Kalida, faces four counts of gross sexual imposition for allegedly compelling females to engage in sexual contact in August 2001, August 2010, June 2011 and August 2011. Each of the counts, handed up by a Putnam County grand jury, is a fourth-degree felony.

Stober is also charged with a count of sexual battery, a third-degree felony, for allegedly engaging in sexual conduct with a student about 18 years old while serving as a school employee in June 2010. He also is charged with attempted sexual battery, a fourth-degree felony, for trying to do so in November 2011.

Between August 2009 and January 2010, Stober also allegedly solicited sexual conduct from someone whose age was between 13 and 16. He faces a fifth-degree felony count of importuning.

He also was indicted on a third-degree felony charge of tampering with evidence, alleging he altered evidence from about August 2009 through May 24.

Stober coached volleyball, basketball and baseball for Kalida until he was placed on leave, with pay, on May 24.

A statement released by Superintendent Don Horstman said Stober left the position in May during "an investigation into allegations that he had engaged in inappropriate communications and/or contact with a student or students."

The school contacted the Putnam County Sheriff's Office and Children's Services upon learning of the allegations, Horstman said.

Stober began an unpaid leave of absence at the start of this school year, and that leave continues, Horstman said.

Assistant Putnam County Prosecutor Todd Schroeder could not be reached for comment Monday.

Chemist may hold key to building a better toxin 'mousetrap'

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? A Florida State University chemist's work could lead to big improvements in our ability to detect and eliminate specific toxic substances in our environment.

Featured on the cover of the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), Sourav Saha's specialized work to strip electrons from the toxic chemical known as fluoride is producing a variety of unique results.

"I started out with the very basic premise of trying to find new ways to detect toxic fluoride in solutions," said Saha, an assistant professor of chemistry at Florida State. "As I got further into that work I was able to create a compound that could actually strip the electrons right off the molecule, producing a variety of tangible benefits such as toxin detection and removal."

Saha's initial fluoride-detection work led to a $100,000 grant from the Petroleum Research Foundation to further explore the possibilities of his research. Using that money, he was able to bring in additional expertise and build his "fluoride-robbing" compound that is the central feature of the work featured on the JACS cover.

"This work is very exciting and novel because the results are surprising," said Timothy Logan, chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida State. "Molecules always have affinity for electrons, with some molecules having a greater affinity than others. Flouride has the highest electron affinity of all, so the ability to strip off electrons from fluoride, especially in the presence of other molecules with lower electron affinity, is truly unique."

Although Saha is excited about the possibilities of his new compound in toxin cleanup, he sees a huge variety of potential applications for his research.

"I think toxin removal is one of the most obvious and relatable benefits my work could lead to, but in reality, there are many additional implications this work could have on daily life," Saha said. "For instance, we could develop this research to create all new types of plastics that could exhibit unique qualities, or improve the effectiveness of devices, such as batteries, that are used to store and transfer energy."

Sony Claims Consumers Don't Want Lower PS3 Prices

Yahoo! has posted an article on Sony's explanation for not cutting PS3 Prices.

Quote:

The electronics giant says it doesn't plan to make any pricing changes -- even to the now technologically inferior 160 GB model -- since it believes customers are tired of having to choose between differently priced systems.

"There's no price drop formally, but the thing that's been happening in the market over the last year or so is that there's been so many retail price promotions, and so many different gift card offers and all those things, being done by all of us (Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony), that we've heard from our consumer, 'Enough with all these weird price moves. What we really want is content and games and value,'" said John Koller, Sony Computer Entertainment America's VP of marketing, handhelds and home consoles, in an interview with Engadget.

Even in an industry where PR spin can put a nice shine on the lousiest news, a company arguing that customers don't want lower prices is hard to swallow.

Nothing in that statement said "consumers don't want lower prices." Did anyone here actually read it? He said (paraphrasing) consumers are tired of convoluted pricing schemes -- which is true. Just look at the bullshit that has been going on lately with all the different versions of games (i'm looking at you AC3 and Dishonored) and retailer exclusives. Its absolutely stupid to have to look at different stores and the gift card refunds, and other deals they use to try to get people in the door, as well as 4 different models of a goddamn console, just to figure out where to buy it and which one to buy. If anyone actually read what was said, the guy is completely correct.

How Yahoo and the people here read that and got "customers don't want price drops" is beyond me. None of this is meant to defend Sony -- i think they're insane for not going with a price drop for the holidays to compete with MS and Nintendo, but that's another issue entirely.

Sony, please stop talking to the press. All you do is make an ass of yourself. The new release at the same price rubbed EVERYONE the wrong way.

Congrats on being the only person who understood this while reading the article. The problem is that now everyone is reporting the Yahoo story, not the Sony press release.

Yes, but he's using that as a defense to not dropping the price on now obsolete hardware. Which makes no sense. Yes, consumers don't like mail in rebates, gift card promotions, and game bundle promotions. They just want the thing they want at the cheapest price the retailer is willing to sell it for.

What does any of that have to do with consumers not wanting the price of "last years model" to drop? Nothing, so the only logical conclusion someone can draw is that he's using the consumers aversion to convoluted price drop schemes to draw the conclusion that it's the price drops they don't like, not the convoluted-ness of it all.

It wasn't a press release, it was an engadget interview. I'd like to congratulate myself for understanding that while reading the article.

I LOVE Sony. I have a Sony TV, a Sony receiver, a Sony camera, a Sony camcorder, a Sony alarm clock, a PS3, a PS2, a Vita, a PSP, and even an ancient Sony Walkman.

But "enough will all these weird prices moves", is the DUMBEST, most BS thing I've ever heard any corporate person say.

Yahoo News is the most disingenuous source out there. I would rather get my daily news from an ACLU representative and the High Wizard of the Klu Klux Klan. At least then the articles would have a chance to be well written.

This reminds me of when Disney first changed their dining plan.

Some people complained it was too much food and some complained that they wish they had a way to adjust the tip based upon service.

So, what did Disney do? They made a big deal of the few complaints and they annouced that they would remove the appetizer and no longer included the gratuity. But they would reduce the price to off set this.

So, how much did Disney eventually reduce the price? $1. Thats right $1 from $40/adult/day to $39/adult/day. They took away around $20 of value and reduced it $1, not to make more money, but according to them, to accede to the wishes of their customers.

There was a lot more outcry about the removal of gratuity then there ever was about too much food or controlling the tip amount, but for some reason they ignored it this time.

So, to sum it up, they used a BS excuse about lisiting to their customers to foist a 47% increase in the cost on those same customers. And they did it with a smile!

I read the interview, and I personally believe it does. While it doesn't directly say "consumers don't want lower prices", that is exactly what he is getting at.

Quote:

There's no price drop formally ... we've heard from our consumer, 'Enough with all these weird price moves. What we really want is content and games and value,'
Right there he claims that consumers don't want the price to move. And he is saying it to defend not dropping the price of the older units. Ergo, he is saying consumers don't want a lower price on the PS3.

Sony: Hmm, should we make the old PS3 units cheaper?
Consumer: ENOUGH WITH THE FREAKING PRICE MOVES!
Sony: You spoke, and we listened! We will leave them at the currently overpriced point!

Brilliant.

The weird thing is that I hated Sony with a passion until 2007.
