New Films: This Week's Reviews From The Arts Desk

Of the?new films?out this week and reviewed on The Arts Desk, there?s a distinctly French flavour and some blinding debuts to get your teeth into.

?Martha Marcy May Marlene? presents a powerful storyline starring Elizabeth Olsen with Sean Durkin directing and writing the film. Simmonds was bowled over by the?film, which bit by bit reveals the disturbing story of a cult through a young girl who has escaped and taken refuge with her sister. The cinematography combined with underlying macabre tones depicts the unsettling conditions that the main character withstood while in the cult as well as representing the challenges she faced trying to get out. With glimpses of Roman Polanski, Michel Haneke and Robert Altman?s best work, the film tells of the main character?s soul searching journey in an inspiring way with undertones of realism.

?Bombay Beach? tells of the collapse of a region in California brought to its knees due to pollution. The movie highlights the town?s struggle to survive by showing a variety of locals and documenting their stories individually in order to give the audience a sense of their unique situations, which proves quite effective. By turns rough and authentic and then startlingly beautiful in style, this finely nuanced film makes a big impact despite its brevity.

Meanwhile Ronald Bergan reports from Paris to celebrate the Eiffel Tower?s career in?film?as it prepares for renovation. The famous landmark is now 122 years old and has been included in many classics, despite the initial controversy the structure sparked throughout the city. Bergan analyses some of the structure?s most famous appearances from traditional French flicks from the Lumi?re brothers to Hollywood pictures such as ?A Star is Born? as well. He wraps up by focusing on its rarer presence in French New Wave films.

??Rolling Thunder? and ?Drive? are some of this week?s top DVD picks and make for great entertainment on a rainy day.
